Secondary substation locates between medium-voltage (MV) power grid and low-voltage (LV) power grid, the function of secondary substation is to change voltage from 10KV or 20KV to 0.4KV. Therefore, the arrangement of this substation easier than that of a primary substation.

Most MV systems use load switches instead of circuit breakers and the load of transformer protected by load switches in secondary substation can get to 2000KVA, if use CB, the load will be 6000KVA. The substation is composed by the following four parts:

Ø MV equipment connecting upper-level power grid.

Ø MV/LV distribution transformer.

Ø LV power distribution cabinet connecting next-level power grid.

Ø Power distribution room.

Secondary substations need metal-clad switchgears with constant space. SM6 load switchgears series are applicable to secondary substations, they can open and close under rated load. The operation of MV firing pin type fuses and load switches can perform the function of isolation and protection. The firing pins pop out when fuse is fused and tripper acts, then the switches trip. The combination of load switches and fuses is cheaper and easier, and more reasonable technical and economic indexes than circuit breaker cabinets, so it is widely used in secondary substations.

In the combination of load switches and fuses, the load switches are used to control the line, and the fuses to protect the line. Secondary substations can be divided into the following three categories:

It is applicable to install in power distribution room or box-type substation, the cables can be connected from the front.

All the control functional units are located on the front operation panel to simplify operation procedures. Some accessories, such as relays, coils, instrument transformers, can be equipped on the cabinets.
